Reflecting on 2012

Things have been very quiet on this blog. A lot of Mom things have been weighing heavy on me. These things I couldn't share with you. What I will say is...my kids are awesome. They are the greatest people my life. I am very proud of everything that have accomplished in 2012.

Little Al's Highlights:

She successfully fought me during each and every hair washing.
Attended four weeks of Mommy & Me at Bronx Dance Theatre
She learned that there is ALWAYS a spot for her in mommy's chair.
Big Aly's Highlight:

He successfully complete his 2nd Big Show
He gave up dance to play soccer.
He learned humor is awesome.
Big Bea's Highlights:

She is a Middle School Tweenager right along with her cousin.
She is sassy and the school photographer.
She hasn't done so many awesome things it hard to pick a third thing.
Happy New Year!

Week 78

Welcome to the last weekly weight-in post of 2012. Yes, I know I have been slacking again on my weekly post. Life has been so super busy. (I am sure you guys were busy too...with the holidays and all.) The scale for the last couple of week have no moved. That is awesome because of the bed foods that I have been eating. My co-worker love with food and oh man there was a lot of food. Cookies, chocolate, soul food and my ex....cupcakes! Lucky for me I didn't let all of that distracted me from my fitness goals. I have been on vacation from work since Dec. 21.(AWESOME!!) I didn't work out the first few days. I went into beast mode. I ran on Christmas day. I did A LOT of squats and I returned to the gym (Planet Fitness) after a long absence. It felt so good to be back at the gym. It was great because all three days I went there weren't a lot of people there. I'll say 15 people max in the entire gym. One thing I did notice while at the gym....Guys staring at the bunz. Because the gym was not full it was very easy to spot the bunz stalkers.

I am telling you, all of those squats really paid off.

Like I mention, I have not seen any change on the scale in some time now. It's stood at 225lbs for a few weeks now. This does not stress me out one bit. I have notice major changes all over my body. My legs are slimming.
August 2012
December 2012
I have these things called knees now. I laugh every time I say that but my knees have been hiding behind fat. My ankles are getting smaller and so are my calves. (Dang, I miss my summer tan.)

My arms have be looking amazing too. I don't have a before picture of my arm fat because I hated the way my arms looked. It looked like chicken cutlets to me. Here are what they look like now.

I no longer have that weird fat collection in my armpits when I lift my arms.

This is my favorite before and current picture to date.
June 2011 vs. December 2012
At can pick out all kind of things from these two pictures. I am not going to. I am so proud of myself. Something times I don't realize how far I have come. I was at day zero in that pink shirt. I needed change and I did just that. I have reach the half way point of my journey. I don't know how long it will take me to get to my goal but I know I'll get that at my own pace and no one else's.

Even Better in 2013

I want to make next year even better than this year! That means it's goal setting time! YEAH! I am kind of hyper writing this blog because I am in post-workout mode. (When I started writing this blog.) I went to the gym. It has been forever since I have been to the gym. I have been a bad Planet Fitness member. I totally forgot how awesome the gym is. The gym was empty when I got there so it was even more awesome. I didn't have too many eyes on me.... except that one creepy old guy.

Well here are my short term goals for January:

Awesome in 2012.

New Year's Eve 2011 I wrote that I was going to be "Awesome in 2012." I know you what? I think I was pretty awesome. I did do many things that I never thought that I would ever do. I think the greatest memories (not mom world related of course) were on my bike. Lenny and I conquered the Five Boro Bike Tour, Tour de Queens and Century Tour. I am still bummed I missed the Tour de Bronx. I'll get over it when I do it in 2013. Along with all the tours I rode to Orchard Beach, City Island, half of the GW Bridge (I met Levonda half way), the West Side of Manhattan and the hilliest parts of the Bronx. My Lenny got an pannier upgrade. Buying the double pannier from Basil was the greatest thing to happen to Lenny. It's like having a trunk for my bike. It makes controlling the front of the bike a lot easier. Now that I have all that "space" I think I can carry it all. Lenny's nickname, after the Century, is "fat ass."

Along with my biking adventures, I met a lot of get people a long the way. I met some of them in person but mostly on Instagram. My most recent find are the people from Track or Die NYC. What an interesting group of people. I even got a tee-shirt. I think I have become a groupie of some sort. HA!

This year I have ventured into running. I did my very first Mud Run and NYRR Road Race. Being that I am not a running I was very impressed that I signed up and complete both challenges. These experiences fueled my motivation that's for sure.

On the Weight Watchers front, the start of summer was rough. I gain 10 pounds in one week. I was very unhappy with what was going on in my life in particular my marriage. I had reached a breaking point and I am still struggling with that relationship. That 10 pound gain was the result of filling the void inside with lots and lots of bad bad food. No many people understand the connection between emotions and food. I appreciated those who do not judge me.

I have been able to lose that gain and lose some more. It seemed to take forever to finally earn another star on my Weight Watchers tracker but I did it. I also successful made it out of the severely obese body mass index category! YAY!

I have to thank those in my life that help with my successes.

My sister, Katrina, has always say yes to taking the kids overnight when my adventures start so early the next day. My kids have a laundry list of issues and needs not just anyone come understand the need. She tackles them head on. Even the early morning wake up calls and lots of pee and poo.

My Bestie, Roxy, is my biggest cheerleader.  She does everything has can to support me and any adventure I get myself into. She is on call during any event. If I need help she is a phone call away. (I haven't needed to call her yet.) She has giving me my Lenny, awesome running socks and loads of emotional support.

My Best Bike Buddy, Levonda, is my challenger. We called each other out to make ourselves even more awesome. We got muddy and sweaty together. She makes the events a lot more fun and memorable.

All the social network support has been amazing. I had friends and followers tell me that I am their inspiration  I never thought I would ever be someone's inspiration. Thank you everyone.

2013 is going to be even better!!

El Museo, MCNY & South Bronx Pride

Life has been a roller coaster ride for most of 2012. So much so that I haven't been able to use my Cool Culture Family Pass the way I want to. Even blogging has taken a back seat. This totally sucks because I love both.

Today I dusted off my latest Cool Culture Family Pass and headed out the door for an adventure. From past experiences I learned that some museums are small enough and close enough to visit. The perfect tag team museums to visit are El Museo Del Barrio and Museum of the City of New York. They are both are on the Museum Mile Fifth Avenue. They sit on the corners of E104th Street.

Since El Museo is the smaller of the two museums we visited it first. There is only one thing that I don't like at this museum  No photography PERIOD! They have plenty of guards to make sure no one takes any pictures! There are so many awesome paintings, pictures and sculptures there that I can not photograph. I have to leave with just my memories. One of the guard actually remembered us from our first visit years ago. I guess not too many Awesome Moms go there.

The guards are so friendly even with the responsibly of stopping picture taking. My dad has been a security guard all of his life so I understand that it's there job to protect. I try not to hassle them. They all smile at us because they did realize that Little Al was special needs. The guard at the entrance directed us to the "Three Kings" puppets where we could take pictures. It was like a little secret or something. They kids loved them.

Up next...Museum of the City of New York! I was very excited because they planned workshops. Someone figured that there were going to be a lot of kids coming in this week because of winter recess. We visited two out of the three workshops. Our first workshop was creating a winter scene using tissue paper. Becky was right at home with the activity because she is an awesome artist. Big and Little Al had a hard time creating a scene out of tissue paper with no pre-created shaped or templates. Their works of art were abstract.

Now that Little Al is better museum trips have become very diffcult. She is unable to touch and poke like she wants so I have to hold on to her extra tight. I am typing my arm is sore for holding her. Gosh is got heavy.

We walked into the exhibit "Activist New York" and I was taking back, but in a good way. The exhibit displayed all the different Activist movements in New York. One movement bought me to my childhood. It was called, "Don't Move, Improve: Reviving The South Bronx. 1970-2012" This focused on the rebuilding of the Charlotte Gardens area of the Bronx. This "area" spanned from Freeman Street to Crotona Park and E173rd Street to Prospect Ave. I grow up just outside this area on E174th Street. When you think Charlotte Gardens in the 80's you think of this:

Now it is this:

You can see in the background of this picture a school. That is the school that I attended as a child and where I currently work at. I remember when those houses were built. The memory that will never go away is living in the urban decay that was my neighborhood. I remember the bands of stray dogs. I remember the "chicken spot" on Boston Road that stole guns in the back. There are still empty lots in my neighborhood. Those lots happened to be owned by MTA.(hmmmm) I was able to show Becky that this was where Mommy grew up. I am not the typical Puerto Rican that came out of my neighborhood... technically I didn't go any where.

My family moved to this neighborhood during the massive de-population. The community struggled to stay strong against the fires, drugs and other bad....things. The school, my school, was the pilar of the neighborhood. Those who came into the neighbor to help us were the every day heros. I learned from them and stood at PS50. I am still here fighting to keep the doors open and teaching the next generations the world is there playground.

After the exhibition we stopped at the button workshop. The guy at the table asked us to make a button about something that we wanted to change. Big Al looked at him like "what?" Little Al could care less and Becky knew right away what she wanted to do. She created a button for no homework on the weekend. I created a button for Little Al called South Bronx Love. Big Al created a Power Rangers button of course.

I love that I was able to take away a sense of pride for my poor neighborhood from today's cultural adventure.

My First ActiveLink Challenge.

I really really love my ActiveLink. I love seeing the little lights light up as my day goes on. A lot of Weight Watchers members ask me if it worth the money. (Cost + monthly fee) and I tell them yes it is.

I made it to the end of my first ActiveLink Challenge. Yep, I had my ActiveLink for a whole four months. You might be asking what is the ActiveLink Challenge? The ActiveLink Challenge is a goal setter. The goal is to become more active within a 12-week period. The challenge pushes you to increase your daily activity points plus. I feel that challenge worked for me because I like to be competitive. I think it's the sportsmanship in my DNA.

I was able to reach an average 92% of my activity goal per day. I earned 317 activity points plus over that 12-week period. I think that is completely amazing. I thought that I could earn so many points.

I am not saying that everything about this challenge was easy. In early October I got sick. I was not able  to earn any APP. It threw my progress off track. It was very hard to refocus. To tell you the truth ir made me a little depressed. I didn't think that I was going to be about it focus on my goal of being healthy. While sick all I was soup, soup and more soup. It just sucked. When I got better I didn't want to work out at all. I didn't earn ANY for almost a month!

Running my first NYRR road race got me back on track quickly and the Skinny Snowman Challenge is motivating me .

So what's next? I have started my next ActiveLink Challenge. I am currently in week 2. My goal at the end of this 12-week challenge is to earn 6 activity pointsplus a day.

I am ready! LET'S DO THIS!!

Feeling Comfortable In My Skin At The United States Marine Corp Ball

This past weekend I attended the 237th USMC Birthday Ball. It was pretty cool. It wasn't my favorite ball to date but it's always great to get dolled up and go some where fancy. This year's ball was at The Eden Place in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

This was the first ball where I felt comfortable in my skin. I wore an amazing navy gown, thanks to my BFF. My make up was done by my sister. I felt my confidence soar.

I felt like a different person at this ball compared to all the others. I showed off my hard work.

In a nutshell I felt awesome!

The craziest thing...I still have my tan lines from the summer and it's December!

Of course I had to do a before and current side by side. I wanted to remind myself how far I have come. The before picture was taken at the 235th ball at Ellis Island. I didn't like the way I fell in that red dress. I felt like a target. I was very uncomfortable in my skin. I was wearing a size 22 and terrible "support" hosiery. The great thing is....I no longer own that dress. I give it away.

I did wear support hosiery this weekend but I didn't feel like a sausage. It did want it was suppose to do and smooth my bumpy parts and not cause internal harm.

Now I have talk about my shoes. I wore black 5 inch platform heels. OMG! My feet were killing me. On the way to the venue I had to walk a block and a half over cracks. I thought I was going to die and my feet weren't even harding me. Six hours later when we were leaving I had to take the same path.....!!!!!!!!!!......What the heck was I thinking when I didn't bring a pair of flats with me. Like I told my BBB I wasn't going to take my shoes off and walk around. I didn't know 99% of the people there and I didn't want to pick up something on my feet. Gross! My toes were numb well into the next day and some of today. Sneakers are my best friends.

Week 74

This pass week was an interesting one. I posted a blog entry almost everyday is pass week. I wanted to share my daily progress with the Skinny Snowman Challenge. I think I did pretty well being that I had a very busy mommy life at the start of the challenge. For week one I earned a total of 425. AWESOME!

Since this is the first Sunday of December I think it's time to create my goals for the month.

1- Run/Walk 30 miles
2- Get 7-8 hours of sleep each night (This is going to be tough)
3- De-clutter my bedroom

Those goals seem do-able for this month. I am going to also set time to blog each day for this month. I didn't add it to the goals because life happens and blogging doesn't.
